Pirates did not disappoint

A fun night at the theatre.
"As a fan of David Hyde Pierce, I was so happy to finally be able to see him on stage. He does not disappoint. The entire cast was talented and seemed to be just having fun and wanting the audience to join them for the ride. Not having seen or been too familiar with Jinxk Monsoons work, I was so pleased at what a wonderful performance she gave. She was no “celebrity casting” to fill seats. She was wonderful! Embodying the part and adding a most enjoyable bit of extra.
The set was well conceived and very functional.
Orchestration was very good and helped the flow of the piece.
For me, the second act was a bit muddled.
As much as I loved Modern Major General, I think a second patter song was not necessary . It would never be as good. I do think the song could have been in a different style. what the song told needed to be conveyed, just differently.
The closing number was good, but it seemed to be suddenly the end of the show. Not necessarily in a good way. I felt that a lot of the second act plot was a bit steamrolled. Maybe a bit of cleaning and tightening up would help.
I am a big fan of the original operetta, and wish more of that music were in Pirates. I did appreciate the reimagining.
Overall I really enjoyed the show. I don’t think anyone could see it and not have a good time.
I would and have recommended it to others.
Now make me happy and record a cd/download.

"This new adaptation of the G&S classic is a hilarious, joyful romp; preserving the character of the original material while infusing modern whimsy into its pores. The cast shines from the leads to the inexhaustible ensemble (the choreography in the big group numbers especially shines). David Hyde Pierce is as good as you’d expect and yet even better. Jinkx Monsoon steals every scene she’s in. I could really list every cast member and give a reason why they were each truly excellent. I smiled from ear to ear the whole time. Don’t wait to see this gem!
