Dead Outlaw Announces Broadway Closing

Dead Outlaw will play its final performance at the Longacre Theatre on June 29. The show began previews on April 12 ahead of an April 27 opening, and will have played 73 regular performances and 14 previews at the time of its closing.

“Like Elmer McCurdy, Dead Outlaw is a true outlier—strange, singular and enduring," said producers Lia Vollack and Sonia Friedman in a statement. "It never followed the rules—and that has made it one of the most daring and fulfilling productions we’ve had the privilege to stage. Despite glowing reviews and a loyal following, the commercial momentum just wasn’t fast enough in a crowded season. As the show reminds us, sometimes the most incredible lives are cut short. This may be the end of Dead Outlaw’s time on Broadway, but we believe deeply in its future and the afterlife it so richly deserves. Endless thanks to the creators, cast, crew, co-producers, investors and Audible for bringing it to life. It’s been an honor.”

But now that she's a-splishin' and a-splashin' in the Bobby Darin musical Just in Time, she's happily living life on the 'Dee' list. Sandra Dee that is. Follow Henningsen backstage at Circle in the Square Theatre where audiences are flocking for a dose of 1950s and '60s nostalgia.

For her final episode, Henningsen takes us backstage for Just in Time's Tony Sunday matinee, filled with energized cast and crew members. Credits: Reid appeared in the film Miss Juneteenth, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2020 and has also graced television screens as Carter Kennedy in the Apple TV+ series Me.

From Balance Beams to Belting Ballads
Reid showcases her triple-threat talent nightly at the Shubert Theatre, but she wasn’t always bound for the stage. Raised by her mom alongside her nine siblings, she remembers her family’s unanimous devotion to sports and how she never considered doing live theater until the curtain closed on her competitive gymnastics career. “My whole family is [interested in] sports,” she says. “I actually used to be a level 10 gymnast. Brenda Pressley to Succeed LaTanya Richardson Jackson in Purpose on Broadway

Brenda Pressley will join the cast of Branden Jacobs-Jenkins’ Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize-winning play Purpose at the Hayes Theater. Pressley takes over the role of matriarch Claudine Jasper on July 15, replacing the production's original Tony-nominated Claudine, LaTanya Richardson Jackson.

Jackson was previously scheduled to appear in the show through July 6 and has now extended her run to July 13. The production, directed by Phylicia Rashad, will run through August 31.

Pressley began her theatrical career in And Still I Rise, written and directed by Maya Angelou, and has performed on Broadway in the original company of Dreamgirls, as well as in The Lyons opposite Linda Lavin, Richard Greenberg’s The American Plan and Cats. Pressley will join the current acclaimed ensemble of Purpose, which includes Jon Michael Hill, Harry Lennix, Glenn Davis, Alana Arenas and Kara Young.

The 16th annual Jimmy Awards (National High School Musical Theatre Awards), hosted by Josh Groban at Broadway's Minskoff Theatre on June 23, has its roster of theater professionals and industry experts who will serve as coaches, judges and presenters for this year's program.

Twelve coaches will mentor the 110 high school students from across the country who have come to New York City for a chance to win the Jimmy Award for Best Performance by an Actor and Actress. They are Jenni Barber, Lisa Brescia, Janet Dacal, Colin Hanlon, Lily Kaufmann, Adam J. Levy, Julia Murney, Desi Oakley, Eliseo Román, Q. Smith, Steven Telsey and EJ Zimmerman.

The judges who will select the Jimmy Award winners and finalists are Montego Glover, LaChanze, Joe Machota, Alecia Parker, Marc Platt, Tara Rubin, Nick Scandalios, Bernard Telsey and Lia Vollack. Billy Porter and Marisha Wallace to Lead Cabaret for Its Final Weeks on Broadway

Tony Award winner Billy Porter and two-time Olivier Award nominee Marisha Wallace will star as Emcee and Sally Bowles in Cabaret at the August Wilson Theatre. Fresh off their run in the London production, the pair begin performances July 22 for the production’s final 13 weeks through October 19.

“I can think of no better way to celebrate this production’s incredible run on Broadway than by welcoming Billy and Marisha into the company for our final thirteen weeks,” said director Rebecca Frecknall in a statement. “They brought down the house every night on the West End, and I cannot wait for Broadway audiences to experience the electricity they generate together.”

Cabaret is currently led by country music star Orville Peck as Emcee and two-time Tony Award nominee Eva Noblezada as Sally Bowles, who will play their final performances in the production on July 20. If you’ve seen Ramin Karimloo on stage, chances are you’ve seen him capture audiences in a troubled but lovable role (Les Miz’s Jean Valjean, Funny Girl’s Nick Arnstein, The Phantom of the Opera’s title specter). Now, in director Scott Ellis’ jazzy revival of Pirates! The Penzance Musical, Karimloo is trying out a new type of leading man: the comedic relief.

In the 2025 retelling of the classic Gilbert & Sullivan comic opera, Karimloo plays the Pirate King, a goofy, often confused leader of a troupe of pirates that the actor calls “badass…until he’s not.” Karimloo makes his entrance on a massive moving ship set, which he eventually flips, kicks and jumps on and off throughout the show. It’s his most physically demanding character yet, with slapstick-style stunts, elaborately choreographed sword fights and a major musical washboard number performed by the entire cast (as seen in the company’s Tony Awards performance). Jinkx Monsoon Will Join Oh, Mary! on Broadway: Trading 'One Pair of Bloomers for Another'

Actress, recording artist and drag superstar Jinkx Monsoon is jumping from Pirates! The Penzance Musical to Oh, Mary! on Broadway. Pirates! plays its final performance on July 27, and Monsoon will make her debut as Mary Todd Lincoln on August 4 for a limited eight-week engagement. The hit comedy by Cole Escola, directed by Sam Pinkleton, also announced it will extend its run at Broadway’s Lyceum Theatre through January 2026.

“I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Cole Escola is the funniest person alive,” Monsoon said in a statement. “Oh, Mary! is one of the best, funniest, most energizing things I’ve seen in my life. The complete cast and creative team is set for Rolling Thunder, a show described as "part rock concert, part documentary" about the Vietnam War and set to the rock songs of the era. The show will begin performances at New World Stages on July 10 with an official opening set for July 24.

Rolling Thunder tells the heartfelt stories of young soldiers caught in the abyss of the Vietnam War and the galvanizing protest movement that sought to end it. The cast includes Drew Becker (Johnny), Cassadee Pope (Linda), Justin Matthew Sargent (Thomas), Daniel Yearwood (Andy), Courtnee Carter (Lauren and others) and Deon’te Goodman (Mike and others). Understudies are Ethan Hardy Benson and Erin Ramirez.

The creative team for Rolling Thunder includes Wilson Chin (set design), Andrea Lauer (costume design), Jake DeGroot (lighting design), Mike Tracey (sound design) and Caite Hevner (video design). Performances will run from August 5 through September 29 at the Nederlander Theatre with an official August 18 opening. The limited eight-week Broadway engagement will follow Ross' summer tour.

Olivier Award winner and Tony Award nominee Tom Francis will play his final performance as Joe Gillis in Jamie Lloyd's Broadway revival of Sunset Boulevard on July 6. Pierre Marais, who currently plays Sammy and understudies the role of Joe Gillis will take over the lead role from July 8 through the end of the production’s extended run at the St. James Theatre on July 20.

Francis, who is departing the show due to a previously announced professional commitment, originated the role in London’s West End in the fall of 2023, receiving an Olivier Award for Best Leading Actor in a Musical. In Dead Outlaw, Broadway's pitch-dark musical comedy about a mummified corpse who ends up as a carnival attraction, Andrew Durand plays Elmer McCurdy—the failed robber, posthumous sensation and dead outlaw of the title. It's not a spoiler to say that Durand spends a portion of the show propped up and lifeless in a coffin. But things are much livelier for him behind the scenes.

In episode five, Andrew and his entourage take to the mean streets of New York City like real rough riders. He plays possum and exposes his toes to subway stations and sidewalks, all for the good of Dead Outlaw. Plus, understudy Noah Plomgren makes his Broadway debut filling in as Elmer while Andrew takes a well-deserved break. It’s exhausting pretending to be dead all the time.

Real Women Have Curves: The Musical will play its final Broadway performance on June 29 at the James Earl Jones Theatre. The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee Sets Its New York Return with a Limited Off-Broadway Run

A revival of The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee will open off-Broadway this fall in honor of the musical’s 20th anniversary. The production will have a limited 14-week engagement at New World Stages, beginning previews November 7 ahead of a November 17 opening. Performances will run through February 15, 2026.

Danny Mefford returns to direct and choreograph, following a successful staging at the Kennedy Center last fall, which starred Philippe Arroyo, Beanie Feldstein, Noah Galvin, Alex Joseph Grayson, Taran Killam, Bonnie Milligan, Nina White, Leana Rae Concepcion and Kevin McHale. Also returning from the Kennedy Center run are costume designer Emily Rebholz, lighting designer David Weiner and sound designer Haley Parcher. Scenic designer Teresa L. The Play That Goes Wrong will welcome Joanie Anderson, Liana Hunt and Evan Alexander Smith to the off-Broadway cast at New World Stages this summer. Anderson begins performances as Annie beginning June 30, Hunt begins performances as Sandra on July 7 and Smith joins as Chris Bean from July 11 through August 22. The Play That Goes Wrong is currently celebrating its 8th year in New York City, and its 5th year playing at New World Stages.

Anderson has been seen in regional productions of By the Way Meet Vera Stark, Sister Act, The Color Purple, Rent, Bring It On and Dreamgirls. A Chorus Line Official 50th Anniversary Celebration to Reunite Original Broadway Cast Members for One Night Only

The Entertainment Community Fund (formerly The Actors Fund), along with Tony Award-winning producers Christopher Ketner and Hunter Regian, have announced a one-night-only special concert A Chorus Line Official 50th Anniversary Celebration. The performance will be held on July 27 at 7:30PM ET at Broadway’s Shubert Theatre, currently home to Hell's Kitchen and A Chorus Line's Broadway home for 15 years from 1975 to 1990.

Benefitting Entertainment Community Fund programs serving dancers, the concert will star original 1975 Broadway cast members Kelly Bishop, Wayne Cilento, Baayork Lee, Priscilla Lopez and Donna McKechnie, with special performances by Charlotte d'Amboise, Jessica Lee Goldyn, Robyn Hurder, Francis Jue, Krysta Rodriguez, Jessica Vosk, Anthony Wayne, Tony Yazbeck and Leigh Zimmerman. Additional casting will be announced at a later date.

Aisha Jackson steps into the role of Daisy Buchanan in The Great Gatsby on June 16, replacing Sarah Hyland who played her final performance on June 15. Jackson stars opposite Ryan McCartan who leads the cast as Jay Gatsby.

Jackson most recently starred opposite Anika Noni Rose in Wonderful Town at New York City Center. Her Broadway credits include The Notebook, Beautiful: The Carole King Musical and the original Broadway casts of Waitress, Paradise Square, Once Upon A One More Time and Frozen, where she made history as the first Black woman to play Anna on Broadway.
